This year we’re celebrating Christmas with a difference at Gallery Oldham. Have you seen our new Window Wonderland display yet? It has transformed our ground floor space into a lightbox to bring much-needed illumination to these dark winter nights.

Gallery Oldham’s window was created by Reform – a creative duo based in Manchester who specialise in creating contemporary and original murals for commercial and private spaces.

Working with both hand-crafted and digital techniques they transform spaces into vibrant, inspiring and unique places.

    Window Wonderland

‘Window Wonderland’ an exhibition with a difference… local artists have been busy across the town centre creatively transforming shop and café windows into magical winter galleries for all to gaze upon.

18 artists from Oldham and Greater Manchester have transformed windows in the Spindles and Town Square shopping centres, Tommyfield Market Hall and Gallery Oldham ready to be discovered for visitors to seek out. Take a look at them all on the Window Wonderland webpage.

As we look to lighten up the dark nights across Oldham this Christmas, we hope residents are inspired to join in our ‘Window Wonderland challenge’ by creating window displays of their own at home.

The best window will be picked at random and will win a Festive hamper worth £50 full of goodies from our most popular Oldham retailers which will be delivered before Christmas.

    Reindeer Parade Trail

Bringing some much-needed festive cheer for all over the holidays will be the Reindeer Parade Trail, which is guaranteed to bring lots of joy across the town centre.

Ten specially created five feet high reindeer sculptures will decorate the Town Centre from the 1 December- 4th January. These reindeers have been designed by local primary schools, community groups and cultural organisations each having a different name and theme.

Be on the lookout over the next few weeks as they travel into Oldham, we hope you will seek them all out to uncover each reindeer’s story.

Oldham Council Arts Development and Town Centre Teams are seeking to commission 10 artists to create a magical Window Wonderland trail in Oldham Town centre. We particularly welcome applications from Greater Manchester artists.

    Winter Window

We want people to rediscover Oldham Town Centre this winter and follow the trail of windows to support town centre businesses. As part of the reimagined Christmas programme we are engaging our communities and local artists to transform the heart of the town centre.

    The Brief

Design, make and install a visual arts-based installation that brings to life a window in Oldham town centre. The installation will be:

    • A visually exciting, vibrant and high quality piece of art to draw in visitors
    • Suitable for a family audience
    • Created in your own artistic style and medium
    • Designed around festive or winter theme
    • Durable – it needs to be in place for the dates below or longer.

    The Installation

    • Should work in daytime and at night and can be illuminated. Some windows will be illuminated using existing light from inside the buildings.
    • Could take inspiration from the building whether historical or current but most importantly be wonderful.

    To Apply

There are 10 opportunities available. Please send an email with ‘Window Wonderland’ as subject heading to the Arts Development team via Rachel.wood@oldham.gov.uk consisting of:
