Holiday At Home: Postcards from Oldham
To kick off our Holiday At Home activities we’re creating Postcards from Oldham with freelance artist Fay Buchanan.
Long before texting and WhatsApp, postcards were a fun and cheap way of sending messages to family and friends. Once a year, mill towns across Lancashire would close for a week or two whilst the workers headed to the seaside for their holidays.
Holidaymakers would buy colourful and sometimes cheeky postcards to send back home, showing pictures and photographs of seaside towns such as Blackpool and Southport – and those unable to get away and were ‘Holidaying at Home’ would sometimes send postcards back, showing the smoky chimneys and mills of Oldham!
We would like you to create and send us your own “Holiday at Home’ postcard inspired by Oldham. Simply design a picture for the front, add a message on the back, and upload your masterpiece here so it can be included in our ‘Lockdown Museum’ exhibition.
