Exploring GO Explorers

Since our early years programmes began in 2013 we have had the privilege to work with hundreds of parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles, carers and everyone else in between. We’re so lucky to have devoted families who join us each week and share their journeys with us.

We’re very excited to share the first blog post from one of our wonderful families. Jenny is an Early Years teacher but has also worked on projects within the charity and corporate sectors. And has been coming to GO Baby and GO Explorers for the past couple of years.  Read all about her adventures and perhaps give her blog a follow too!

If you haven’t been to any of our sessions let us give you a little more information:

GO Baby –

GO Baby is the galleries award nominated first early years programme. Running for seven years it has gone from strength to strength and have had as many as 80 families joining one session.

Inspired by the galleries extensive art, natural history and social history collections GO Baby supports families to develop strong bonds, essential in the first stages of development. We work with families across Oldham and the other Greater Manchester boroughs and welcome people from all walks of life. Our youngest attendee being just eight days old!

Influenced by Reggio Emilia and Heuristic play approaches we develop and create a mixture of areas which the babies are welcome to explore using all of their senses. We do this by using a mixture of sensory and natural materials. We’re keen for families to re-use, borrow and re-create areas at home; for this reason we use materials that can be easily and cheaply sourced.

Originally the GO Baby programme was split into two halves, a session for 0 – 12 months and one for 12 – 24 months. We found there was a growing number of our babies were getting too old for the programme and needed their own space to explore and create friendships. So we decided it was time to pay attention to our toddlers!

Five years later and we have seen hundreds of toddlers exploring our spaces, based usually in our education studio we encourage sharing, play, exploration and testing boundaries in a safe space.

Continuing the ethos of GO Baby, GO Explorers encourages carer/child bonding and these sessions often support a messy elements or a craft activity which they can take home – and not have to worry about the tidy up!

If you have any more questions about any of the E.Y sessions, please feel free to get in touch. We can’t wait to welcome our families back for more early years fun at Gallery Oldham.
