Making Memories

For many years Gallery Oldham has run successful reminiscence projects and activities. We are a dementia friendly gallery and museum and all of our staff have been trained as Dementia friends.

Making Memories is a new programme of arts activities, talks, performances and training to help the carers of people with Dementia.

Making memories is all about introducing museums objects to people who may never visit a museum or gallery.  These objects – a clog, rolling pin, a hat box or an old football programme – can inspire marvellous memories and truly creative responses.

We believe that storytelling, poetry, performance, reminiscence and other arts activities can enhance personal identity as well as revealing hidden aspects of peoples lives.

It is these ‘hidden histories’ that enable us to see beyond the basic health and care needs of older people.

Past Times Reminiscence Boxes

We have a range of themed boxes available to hire by care homes and other organisations working with older people. Boxes contain museum items as well as newly bought objects.

All items have been specially selected to  bring back memories for those who find it difficult to recall the past and cost £40 for four weeks hire.  For more information and to hire a box please call 0161 770 4742.

Curator Talks and Handling Sessions

Bring your group along to Gallery Oldham and enjoy an informal talk by one of our curators. We have a permanent and temporary exhibition programme and can cater for groups of up to 20 people.

You will get the chance to handle some of our collections and most importantly enjoy a cup of tea with us. Groups would need to make prior arrangements with the Collections Team.

Training for you organisation

Bespoke Creative Reminiscence Boxes

Gallery Oldham offer a bespoke creative reminiscence service where we can come to your organisation, consult with your older people, staff and relatives to find a common theme of interest.

We will then source suitable objects and devise creative, stimulating activities relating to the objects and theme. Your staff will then be trained on how to work with the box and
deliver the activities.

See the Me

Oldham Theatre Workshop offer a theatre-based training package entitled ‘See the Me’ at your venue. Training is tailored for carers, groups, community organisations and health professionals to explore issues using specific therapeutic interventions involving theatre.

The creative process enables participants to better understand the value and impact of creative activities for those with Dementia.
